Why Flash Websites Are Starting To Diminish

The constant battle between a fully designed flash website and a website that meets current web standards, may finally be coming to an end. For those of you who do not know what it means to have a fully designed website, you could consider your self very fortunate. While Flash has a few advantages like creative animations (that may take forever to load), the pros of having a fast and smooth running website are endless and very pleasing to its users. With this being said, the article I found over at Smashing Magazine lays out the entire debate.

If you want to “go big” visually with a website, delivering complex interaction and a rich experience across a wide range of browsers, Flash is the only way to go. Right? Nope. Given the widespread adoption and advancements of modern browsers and JavaScript libraries, using Flash makes little sense. But it does have its place on the Web, considering the need for progressive enhancement. Smashing Magazine…

Here are a few reasons why SMX Design discourages a fully designed website using Flash…

Very time consuming to create, thus very expensive. We have seen horrible websites created in flash costing companies more than $100,000 right in our own backyard. Is that rediculous or what?
They don’t rank in Google for search terms. Besides spending an awful amount of money on your “pretty” animated website you better budget for a very expensive PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaign and be ready to hire someone to manage that account.
Usually Flash websites are embedded on a single page, thus Google, Yahoo, and Bing only see your website as having a single page destroying your chances for consistent search engine traffic.
A website can loose its purpose after two simple clicks. Users can get extremely frustrated when trying to navigate through a website if it takes longer than 5 seconds to load each page. Face it, potential clients don’t have all day!
You will pay your designer everytime you want something updated! Forget about being able to update flash content yourself as the client of a web design company that designs all of their website in flash. If you are currently in this situation you might want to fill out a quote on our website, or begin to budget for long painful Flash Design class at your local college.
iPad’s and iPhones do not support Flash functionality. Way to go Apple!
Potential customers or users that do not have extensive knowledge about computers may not even have the capability of running flash on their machines!
More time is spent looking at animation other than reading the important textual messages or understanding the original message that website is to portray.

Remember, most visitors spend less than 30 seconds on a web site. You need to offer the visitor what he/she is looking for in the shortest amount of time possible. Don’t get me wrong here, Flash does have it’s place in web design and we shouldn’t lock the door and throw away the key completly. There are a few ways to integrate Flash and still meet web standards. A few examples include;

image slideshows
animated text
displaying videos
playing music
or other animated features or functions

As long as you have contextual based content on your website or blog, using flash to enhanced its appearance is always recommended. Just make sure you don’t drop the anchor and go completely overboard with animation because your business and your website will go no where via the Internet.
